The story of

SABINA von Essen

My name is Sabina and I am an international artist born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. My love for painting started early when I painted together with my mother. After she sadly passed away when I was only ten, art became my way of coping with loneliness and grief. It was then I first turned to painting as a form of therapy.

Later in life I was encouraged to focus on education and pursued engineering, eventually completing a master’s degree in Media Technology at the Royal Institute of Technology. My grandfather used to say that the world needs more engineers than artists, and for a long time I believed that. But despite years of studying mathematics and technology I felt something was missing. Art became the puzzle piece that completed me.

Painting was first an obsession, almost like medicine. It gave me peace when I was overwhelmed with stress and anxiety during high school. Over time it transformed into a passion. I began creating my own worlds, reimagining environments that I had a special connection to and painting them in a balance between fantasy and reality, abstractness and concreteness.

When I sold my first painting for fifty dollars it was never about money but about being able to afford new materials. As more people connected with my work I realized how powerful it was to create something that resonated with others. That feeling gave me the courage to continue.

Today I sell my art worldwide. Without any formal art education I have built my own path as an artist, and what began as therapy has now become my life’s journey. For me painting is not about the destination but about the process, the constant exploration of new ideas, emotions and techniques.
